Treatment

Clearly, treatment depends on the cause of your arrhythmia. There are a number of treatment options depending on your condition, and your physician will look for the least invasive treatment to effectively control your arrhythmia. Treatments range from medications to implantable devices, as well as minimally-invasive catheter-based therapies.

Options include:

Medications

Anti-arrhythmic medications are often prescribed to treat, prevent or lessen the frequency or severity of abnormal heart rhythms.

Pacemakers

An electrical device for stimulating or steadying the heartbeat if the heart rate drops below a certain number of beats per minute or for re-establishing the rhythm of an arrested heart.

Implanted cardiovascular defibrillators

This pacemaker-like device monitors the heart and delivers a
life-saving shock if an abnormal heart rhythm is detected.

Cardiac ablation

Catheters are used to release small bursts of radiofrequency energy in specific locations in the heart muscle to destroy small areas of tissue that give rise to abnormal electrical signals.

Cardioversion

A controlled, electric shock that is delivered to restore the heart's normal rhythm.
